Getting a Real Online Job

Online Sunshine Plan - the truth about online businessI've been working online a few years now, once I finally got fed up with the noise of having to have a "job" and a "boss" who told me what I had to do when, how I needed to dress, and how much taxes the government was going to take from every paycheck.

Of course, you probably don't think it was that easy - but it really went about that way. But then, I'm a lucky cuss, in general.

The point was that I had developed some real-world network ties earlier and one of them called me, mostly out of the blue, and wondered if I wanted to do some web-design work for him.

Now this has been hit and miss sometimes, but I've long ago learned to tighten my own belt when I needed to. Plus, this gave me time to research and write books, and so on.

There are a few things you should know:

1. Skip Internet Marketing completely. Unless you love marketing itself. Don't figure that you are going to get a "legitimate work from home job" or get rich quick with any of these schemes. It simply doesn't work that way. Have a real skill that people want and will pay you to do. But from experience, people who are selling "info-products" online (unless they are real, published, paper-back and hard-back books like mine) are selling hot air. I've got several hard-drives filled with this air-business stuff to prove it.

2. While you deal in Internet-related products, the same rules apply as when you work in someone else's office. Go to work when you need to and go a great, professional job with everything you do.  Deliver more than you were expected. Go the extra mile. Treat people like you would want to be treated.

3. You don't make money online. You provide valuable service through online channels. That is the key point. You have the business first - offering something valuable which people will pay you money to get. Then and only then do you take it online to find people who want it.  Marketing is marketing, online or off. There's no real difference - except it's easier to scam online (and "get away with it") than in real life.

4. The way you treat people is the way you are going to get treated. So don't lose sleep over those people who are running big "schemes" on the Internet and selling hot air. They'll get theirs. It might be a couple of years, but it always comes around. Don't fall into their trap. Treat people fairly while you watch out for people who are "working the system". Like taxes and governmental assistance, there's always a catch. Be honest, give more than expected, work to help everyone you meet. In that way, this is what you will receive in return. Golden Rule. Works all the time.

That's my two cents. And that's the book I wrote after I went through everything these marketers had - and wound up with nothing (except an earlier version which never sold a single copy).

Right now, I'm still working online and selling some stuff here and there, so I'm more than half tempted to update this again and put it into a version which makes it easy for people to get the data they've needed so long out there.

You can check out this book over at my storefront on Lulu.  Even buy a copy if you want...
